All instruments can be
damaged from improper use or cleaning. Damage may take the form of
corrosion, stains, rust, or pitting. Instruments with joints- scissors,
hemostats, sponge holders, are particularly vulnerable to damage from
trapped moisture.

We recommend the
following to help preserve the life of your instruments-
- Clean with soap
and water only- avoid abrasive cleaning powders and steel wool
- Rinse with plain
water
- Dry thoroughly
before storing
- Avoid prolonged
contact with the following-
acids
bases
solutions containing mercury
solutions containing sodium
solutions containing potassium
solutions containing barium
strong saline solutions
Lysol,
phenol, or iodine
- Do not sterilize
stainless and chrome or gold plated instruments together
- Do not steam
sterilize gold plated instruments
- Hemostats with
insulated handles will likely be damaged by any sterilization process
